Gum Treatment – Lake Highlands, Dallas, TX

Protect Yourself from Gum Disease

Gum disease (also referred to as periodontal disease) is a common oral infection that starts out very subtly – patients may see some minor bleeding in their saliva after flossing, for instance. However, untreated cases can eventually grow to threaten not only your healthy teeth, but your overall well-being too. At the dental office of Dr. Jim Miller, our team provides dedicated periodontal screenings and effective therapy in the form of scaling and root planing in order to keep our patients’ smiles safe from gum disease.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is an inflammatory condition that occurs in the gums. In the first stage, called gingivitis, bacteria that live in plaque buildup produce acids that irritate the gum tissue. Over time and without intervention, the disease develops into periodontitis and causes the gums to pull away from your teeth, creating pockets where more plaque and food particles can accumulate. Eventually the infection spreads to and can permanently damage teeth’s supporting tissue and bone. Ultimately, untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

Some of the common symptoms can be difficult to spot to the untrained eye. It is important to keep a look out for the signs of gum disease, such as the following:

  • Red, swollen gums.
  • Bleeding gums.
  • Constant bad breath.
  • Receding gums.
  • Pus in between teeth.
  • Changes in your bite.
  • Loose permanent teeth.

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact us to set an appointment. We can restore you to good oral health.

Why is early treatment so important?

Like many other conditions in the body, it is better to identify and treat gum disease sooner rather than later. That’s why Dr. Miller performs a thorough exam at your checkup appointment every six months. If you and Dr. Miller can catch gum disease during the gingivitis stage, it can usually be reversed through much simpler, less invasive treatment. However, more advanced cases require more intensive treatment to resolve.

How does Dr. Miller treat gum disease?

Gingivitis typically is addressed through a routine cleaning combined with proper oral care at home. To treat periodontitis, Dr. Miller performs scaling and root planing. Scaling is basically a deep cleaning above and below the gum line to clear out those pockets of trapped plaque. Then, Dr. Miller smooths the rough surfaces of exposed tooth roots to prevent plaque from building up there again and to facilitate healing in the gum tissue.

Can gum disease be prevented? How?

The good news is that gum disease is preventable! In addition to the exam twice a year, you also get a cleaning that removes plaque buildup, ensuring that harmful bacteria can’t wreak havoc to your well-being. But you can also help prevent gum disease through healthy oral habits, including brushing and flossing daily. By implementing these little tasks into your life, you can make a big impact in your oral health.

At Jim Miller Family Dentistry, we care about our patients and are committed to maintaining their healthy teeth and gums for the long term. We look forward to restoring your smile soon. Contact us for an appointment today!
